Director of IT Portfolios

Hays Executive was appointed to recruit a Director of IT portfolios for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The HMRC was a recently merged department consisting of HM Customs and Excise and the Inland Revenue.

The role itself had overall responsibility to manage change across 250 different IT projects and an annual spend of around £400m. At the time this was one of the largest IT change programmes in Europe. Advertisements were placed in national publications and a variety of recruitment web-sites and an executive search exercise was launched. It was necessary to speak to a wide variety of individuals to seek potential recommendations due to the unusual combination of skills required. A head hunted candidate was offered the position. Despite being offered another role with a higher salary the candidate decided to take the HMRC role.
